Amazing art in Raleigh this March! and First Friday!

I am so excited! Now, if I can get rid of this cold, it will be an amazing First Friday this week! There are so many great things going on in Raleigh this month! First, I just found out  one of the photographers who influenced me most while I was young- his  work is being shown at the NC Museum of History opening this week! I first studied Lewis Hine’s work when I was in high school. He was able to use his photography in the early 1900′s to help win rights for children as young as 5, who were working in mills, coal mines and other horrible environments. His photographs are so incredibly moving, and they made a serious difference in the lives of these children as well as future children. The focus on the exhibit in Raleigh is on children working in the NC textile mills. I have never seen his work other than in books, so I am really excited to see this show. I thought this would be a great excuse to have a fieldtrip to the Museum and then dinner out in Raleigh! If people are interested in viewing the other exhibits listed below as well, let me know! We could always make it a day! Here is another link to Lewis Hine

Wed. March 17th, 3:45 meet at NC Museum of History Lobby

And next, my good friend Lee Moore Crawford, has her opening reception of her art combining painting and photography at the Nature of Art Gallery in the Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh this Friday! She is an amazing artist and has been working so hard on this show, I can’t wait to see it! Click here to read more about it! Opening reception on March 4th, First Friday 6-9pm.

And then, at Adam Cave Fine Art, is an exhibit of Diana Bloomfield’s pinhole photography. Diana is an amazing photographer whose work I have admired since moving to Raleigh. She works in many old, really interesting processes such as platinum and gum printing. I am really excited to see this show! For more info on this exhibit and directions click here.

Hopefully I will still have time to get to a few other shows this First Friday! I hope to also go to the Mahler  and  to Monument!

Have a great week!

Editing through photos, and learning the lessons again

Jodie Matthews, 1999 by Elizabeth Galecke

I have been going though the photos, trying to decide which images I will use for the 15 year anniversary exhibit opening on April 2!. This is Jodie Matthews- he was one of the first kids I worked with in Raleigh through the Make A Wish Foundation of Eastern North Carolina. His mom had heard that I had worked with kids with life-threatening illness in Austin- this has led me to working with amazing people. People dealing with life changing-threatening illnesses, but who are strong, hopeful and living life to the fullest. Jodie was a Senior in high school- he lit up the room when he walked in- and he had a type of cancer that was incurable- he had been through way more at 17 then most people have to deal with in a life-time. You would never know it from the positive energy he emitted. His wish was to be a role model for children fighting cancer- but his message is for all of us. ” My wish and message to you, is that if you have cancer, no matter how bad, there is hope. Believe in yourself like me, and good things will happen.”  Everytime I read this, I think about how important this is for all of us. He was an inspiration and I am so glad that I was able to work with him. Sadly,he passed away not too long after we worked together, but his mission needs to be passed on. I wanted to rememeber him as a part of this special celebration- and hope that his message reaches many more.

February First Friday in Raleigh!

Well, I decided to give up on some computer issues we are having to write a little about this weekend, and events coming up! I haven’t written in a while- I think it was a combination of artist’s block, the winter blues, and the flu! So I am trying to catch up! This Friday there is a lot going on in Raleigh! The weather may be a little messy, but I am ready to get out of my house- see some art, and enjoy someone else’s cooking for a night! Soooo, First of all- the Elizabeth Galecke Photography/ MoodSwing jewelry collaboration will be at Found Studio for First Friday festivities. Stop by the gallery at 16 Glenwood Ave(Glenwood South) between 6-9pm and say hello and check it out along with a bunch of other amazing artists work! We also have pieces of our work at the Collector’s Gallery Downtown. It is a fun space to check out! They will be open for First Friday as well!

In Boylan Heights there is a toy camera photo exhibit. All of the photographs were taken with plastic camera using FILM!  Being a film shooter, that makes me happy! I didn’t get it together to enter anything, but have some friends exhibiting with amazing work! I can’t wait to check it out! This is at Rebus Gallery from 6-9pm this Friday and will be up for the month.

If you are looking for a place to eat while hitting the town this weekend, there are so many great places to try! Here are a few of my fav’s!  Zely and Ritz, Pooles Diner, Remedy, Raleigh Times, Humble Pie

Hope to see you out and about!
