NC Beach Photo Sessions

I am in traveling mode! I just got back from a long weekend in Dallas- hanging out with my family, photographing my nephews every move! My oldest nephew who is 11 had two School of Rock Concerts- The theme was indy rock- It was so great! I will post photos as soon as I get all of my old-school film developed!

I am heading to NC beaches for the next two weekends. I will be in Kitty Hawk and Atlantic Beach over Memorial Day weekend and still have some spcae available, and will be in Wrightsville Beach the following weekend- with two openings left. Over the 4th of July I will be back in the Atlantic Beach/Emerald Isle. area. Please call or email with any questions, and check out my website for samples of my work at the beach. www.elizabethgalecke.com

Photographing on the beach is always a challenge, with wind, sand, bugs, waves crashing- but the results are so worth it! I love it and can’t wait to get started this season! Plus, it is just nice to get into a new place- check out my favorite local shops and eateries and see old friends. My friend Lynn, who owns Ziabird in Wilmington is celebrating her 1st anniversary! Last summer my polaroid transfers were her opening exhibit- I can’t believe how fast it has gone!

I hope you all have a great holiday weekend!

Ziabird

I am back from Wilmington- it was beautiful shooting on the beach this past weekend- a little hot, but beautiful! The Ziabird reception was so wonderful- my friend Lynn’s store is just what I dreamed it would be- a mix of 1920′s vintage inspired accessories and jewelry, and modern artist made clothing. And fabulous hats By Terry Graziano! I ended up with one of these after doing photos of the store and trying it on a few times! It was fun to see my portraits and Polaroid transfers in the mix of the shop! I met some great people too at the reception, there are amazing artists and designers in this world! I am so happy to be a part of it.

The shoot I did with Lynn in her store was fun- we had her sitting up on her display counter- the window light streaming in behind her- she looked like a 20′s movie star-  of course I shot film, so we’ll have to wait for the final results! I will post them next week.  After the shoot, it was an hour or two of friend therapy- I miss the days of just sitting with a great friend for hours talking about life- it was awesome!

My good friend,Lynn, just opened a really beautiful boutique in Wilmington called Ziabird(www.ziabird.com)  She invited me to be her feature artist for the grand opening of her shop! Ted, Lynn and I hung the work a few weeks ago before the store was finished, so this week when I go back- it will be so great to see it all put together! We hung two different themes of work- a small grouping of my portrait work which I framed in a mix of flea-market and modern frames- and then a mix of my Polaroid Transfer work.

“Legend has it that sometime in the mid-1960s one of Polaroid’s research photographers
inadvertenly left a Polaroid negative face down on a countertop, later picked it up,
and found an image had transferred to the counter. He and several of his colleagues began
to play with the process until Polaroid founder Dr. Edwin Land found out about it and
sternly discouraged this deviant activity. And so Pandora’s box was closed ….
for the time being. – John Reuter”

I love working with Polaroid transfers, so I am excited to have these on exhibit. These images I take when I have time off of my portrait work- it is quiet, reflective work- and the subject matter is usually landscape- but intimate- not vast in any way. Little vignettes of scenes that I see when I am traveling or just taking a day off. I love the transfer process, it is challenging and exciting- I am so incredibly old-school. Anything that takes a long time, doesn’t include sitting in front of a computer, has a combination  with chemicals and film(except when I am cooking)- and can’t be duplicated exactly ever again- just makes me happy. The unfortunate issue is that Polaroid is stopping production of their film- and if this happens, no more real Polaroid Transfers. Yes, they can be done by computer- but it’s not the same.  There are groups like Save Polaroid and the Impossible Project, trying to keep it alive!
