Last week a few good friends got together to purchase one of my gift certificates for their good friend who is adopting a little girl.  One of them wrote the sweetest poem to go on the certificate  I asked… and the author, Leigh Ann Wilder, gave me permission to share!  Get out the kleenex box:) I can’t wait to meet Phoebe!

When the highchairs are gone

and Good Night Moon has been packed away

We hope these photographs

will bring lasting memories

of that very special day

Phoebe came to brighten our lives,

and to forever be your little girl.

If you are looking for some great local things to do this weekend , there is a lot to choose from! I checked out the Five Points Farmers Market last weekend-in the NOFO parking lot. It was small, but really great. I picked up some incredible jalapeno cheddar bread from YellowDog Bread Company– I am going to try their rustic wheat or sourdough this weekend. I also bought some INCREDIBLE pimento cheese from Bickett Market– and beautiful beets from another vendor that I can not remember the name of-sorry, maybe it was New Grass Gardens?! And last, blueberries and peaches from Smith’s Nursery! Go check it out! And if you are still in need of more fresh produce and want to support the local farmers, we subscribe to a local CSA- Papa Spuds! We can order what we would like each week, and it is delivered to our door! I love it! This week I got local/organic blackberries, green summer squash, mixed salad greens, sweet corn and mushrooms!

Ok, off the subject of food for a minute This Saturday starting at 3pm is the Kirby Derby!! I have been out of town for the last few years for this- but I am excited to check it out this year! it is a neighborhood party-but everyone is invited…it  includes a  parade that is unlike any you have been to in the past- it is full of really creative people, crazy floats, and great local music! Cocktails on the curb while watching is highly suggested. oh, and back to food again- Baja Burrito will be there selling their famous delicious burritos! Check out the website for all of the days events!

Shop Local Raleigh is putting on a great free festival this Saturday at Seaboard Station to help support our local businesses. Music, Bouncy tents, face painting, dog wash, and local food to purchase- 2-8pm! Also, Stop by one of my fav women’s clothing shops, Galetea too while you are there!!

oK! back to work! I will be updating our website and blog with lots of new photos this weekend! It has been babyland in here- so many cute babies and lots of great beach photos to share too! Have a great weekend!

Chix in Business!

About 13  years ago I gathered together a few friends I had met shopping/eating in local places around the Triangle- we met for dinner, became friends, and helped each other’s businesses grow. Our monthly table at Humble Pie in downtown Raleigh  got larger and larger and we moved to my house for organized potlocks- just some local women business owners getting together for good food and wine to talk about their businesses, issues, how to find the best plumber and sometimes more personal conversations, (this we are not allowed to discuss outside of the living room:) We outgrew our unorganized ways and incorporated a few years ago as Chix in Business, Inc. A non-profit organization. I am proud of how far we have come- but it has been difficult. Small businesses are taking it really hard right now in this economy- many are having to close, and that  breaks my heart. These unique people make our city interesting, please support these amazing talented women!  You can go to our website and search any type of good/service and find someone local to support! And if you are one of these amazing, talented women, or are thinking about starting  business, come and hang out with us! I promise you will build friendships that are meaningful and giving! www.chixinbusiness.org

Tomorrow I am participating in a panel on how to network your business, but in a genuine way- building long relationships with people. I can’t wait! The panel is facilitated by our Chix Vice Chair- Stephanie Zizzo, who is a Career and Life Coach. I will sit on a panel with Lori Paquette of Lip Design, Alison Stephenson of Bajam Solutions, and Tina Cochrane of Hire Networks. It’s not too late to show up! Go to our Chix website and register or come as a walk in! I almost forgot to mention, our lunch is at a local Durham restaurant, Bocci– the food is amazing- it’s right off of 40-super easy to get to!

Each year we support a local non-profit organization who fits our mission. This year we choose  The Women’s Center of Wake County. We have a few events that will be held to donate canned goods, as well as grocery store gift cards for these women and children. One of our Chix Business owners ,Sara Dail, who owns a fair trade boutique in Cameron Village, is accepting canned good donations on our behalf for the summer months. Stop in Beleeza and check out her amazing store, and drop off some canned goods as well!

Please keep shopping local and support your local non-profit organizations during these difficult times!  Thanks!!

Elizabeth

This week has been a little challenging, it is sunny, then pouring, then sunny again for 15 minutes and pouring again- not to mention the humidity and mosquitoes! We have managed to have a great week of shoots though- the light that glows through the clouds between the raindrops has been perfect for portraits this week! Most of the sessions this week are 20-30 mini-sessions, so they are short which makes it really easy with the weather being so unpredictable! I have the full range of sessions this week too, which I love. Monday I was at the beach photographing sweet little Jack running on the beach wearing only his plaid shorts and jumping the waves, yesterday was Sherry Essig of Priority Ventures, really fun headshots, today were all little girls wearing their sundresses out in my studio gardens. And tomorrow, I have a client bringing in their new puppy and kids, I am seeing some crazy, muddy, fun photos through my mind’s eye! And then, this coming weekend, back for more beach photos on Wrightsville Beach! This time all teenagers. I am crossing my fingers that we won’t be dodging the raindrops for those!
